Now, let’s dive into the 2024 wedding and event trends that are in and those that are out.
PLANNING TRENDS:
In:
A Focus on Personalization and Experience
Akeshi Akinseye of Kesh Events shares that the emphasis this year is on creating unique, personalized experiences. Couples are looking for elements that not only look great but also engage their guests in a meaningful way. In 2024, the landscape of weddings is transforming, with a heightened emphasis on personalization and meaningful experiences. Couples are moving away from the traditional and embracing ceremonies and receptions that are a true reflection of their unique love stories and preferences. It's an era that transcends the conventional DJ-only setup. We are witnessing an upsurge in a range of the finest entertainment options, including ceremony choirs, innovative band and DJ fusions, captivating dancers, and enchanting singers. This isn't just about music; it's about crafting an immersive experience that will linger in the memories of the guests long after the event.
Additionally, the attention to detail in these weddings is reaching new heights. Every nuance, from the smallest decor element to the overall event theme, is meticulously planned and executed. This focus on details ensures that each aspect of the wedding, no matter how minor it may seem, contributes to creating a harmonious and unforgettable atmosphere. It's exciting because the possibilities for incorporating these personalized details are endless. From custom-designed invitations to bespoke gifting, from unique table settings to curated culinary experiences, every detail is an opportunity to infuse the couple's personality and vision into their special day.
DECOR TRENDS:
In:
Chic Bows and Bold Colors
For decor, bows are making a big comeback," mentions Akinseye. Bows are back, adding elegance to various elements. They're being used in innovative ways, from candle decor to napkin ties. It’s a chic and fun trend especially for intimate gatherings. Bold colors are also in, adding vibrancy and personality to wedding settings.
In:
Seating Charts: An Interactive Experience
The trend for seating charts in 2024 is moving towards interactive displays, offering guests a more engaging way to find their seats, adding an element of fun and surprise to the traditional seating arrangement, notes Akinseye.
Nuage Designs' Pablo Oliveira on Reinventing Linens in 2024 Weddings
In the realm of high-end event design, linens play a pivotal role in setting the tone and ambiance of a celebration. Leading the charge in couture linen rentals, Nuage Designs, under Pablo Oliveira’s creative direction, is redefining linen trends in luxury weddings for 2024. Moving away from the traditional use of uniform linens, Oliveira highlights a shift towards a more eclectic and dynamic approach.
Out with Uniformity, In with Eclectic Elegance
Gone are the days of using the same linen style throughout a reception. "The trend is now leaning towards mixing different patterned linens," Oliveira notes. This approach brings an exciting and curated color palette, elevating the overall aesthetic to be more engaging and personalized.
Artful Curation and Personal Expression
The essence of this trend lies in the artful selection and placement of varying linens. It's about creating a cohesive yet diverse visual story that resonates with the couple's personal style. This move towards varied patterns and colors in linens opens up new avenues for creativity, making each wedding uniquely reflective of the couple’s taste.
In 2024, the approach to wedding linens by Nuage Designs and Pablo Oliveira signifies a broader trend in event design – one that embraces variety, personalization, and creative expression.
FILM TRENDS:
The Rise of Social Media Roll-Out
Caleb Jordan Lee of East West highlights a new trend in wedding film sharing. Clients are eagerly sharing their wedding memories," shares Caleb Jordan Lee. The trend for 2024 is a well-coordinated release of wedding photos and videos. It’s safe to say that no one has looked forward to sharing the wedding photos and videos more than the client. My prediction for 2024 is that we’ll see more vendors onboard collaboration posts scheduled for 2-4 weeks after the wedding. This strategy allows for the client to post first to their friends and family – followed by a multi-day release of photos and videos from the vendors. The additional time allows all vendors to receive finished galleries and collect any social media credits and captions from the event planner. Post-wedding, vendors collaborate on scheduled posts, allowing couples the first share. This approach honors their moment before a broader release," he explains.
Luxury Destination Cinematography: The New Wave
In: Luxury Content Creation: Molly Agnes from Love Story Films, renowned for her luxury destination cinematography, underlines the emerging trend of luxury content creation in wedding cinematography. “The narrative of 2024’s weddings is being weaved through the lens of luxury,” says Agnes. These content creators are not mere videographers but artists who encapsulate the essence of an opulent wedding through cinematic storytelling. Their films are less about documenting and more about creating a visual poetry that resonates with the depth and elegance of the occasion.
In: Micro Weddings and Midweek Soirees: Agnes also highlights the rising trend of micro weddings and midweek destination events. These intimate gatherings are not just a choice but a statement, reflecting a desire for uniqueness and personalization. “It’s about creating an experience that’s rich in detail and high in value, not just in terms of budget, but emotional investment,” Agnes adds. These smaller-scale weddings allow for the infusion of finer details and more meaningful interactions, something a larger affair might struggle to offer.
In: Fireworks: Adding to the grandeur, fireworks have become a staple in luxury weddings. “There’s something ineffably magical about a fireworks display at a wedding. It’s as if the stars themselves are celebrating the union,” muses Agnes
Out: On the flip side, some traditional elements are seeing their curtain call. The garter and bouquet toss, once staples of wedding receptions, are being replaced by more contemporary and inclusive activities. Similarly, the era of large bridal parties is giving way to smaller, more intimate groups. “It’s about quality, not quantity. The focus is shifting to having those who truly resonate with the couple’s journey,” explains Agnes. The sweetheart table, too, is being rethought, as couples prefer to be amidst their loved ones, celebrating in unity rather than seclusion.
PHOTOGRAPHY TRENDS:
In: Capturing Authenticity - Lucy Munoz from Lucy Munoz Photography emphasizes the shift towards capturing genuine, spontaneous moments. "Wedding photography in 2024 is about being real, creative, inclusive, and eco-friendly. Drones and film photography are adding new dimensions to wedding storytelling. Couples want the storytelling to be at the forefront of their images, which captures them in an authentic and genuine way. Film photography is still appreciated by couples who want a distinctive look and quality. Those traditional, standard shots are no longer the go-to; now, couples are all about what they envision for their wedding and making sure you capture their true essence and personality. Some couples may opt out of the bouquet/garter toss and others might incorporate more meaningful elements from their cultures. Being eco-friendly is becoming a thing too, with couples wanting photographers who care about the environment by choosing eco-friendly packaging and gear. So, in 2024, wedding photography is all about being real, creative, inclusive, and mindful of the planet!" she says.
Out: Staged Shots - "Gone are the days of stiff, overly posed wedding photos. Couples now desire images that truly reflect the emotions and essence of their special day," Munoz adds.
Afrik Armando, a renowned luxury wedding photographer shares his insights. In 2024, the focus is on natural posing that reflects genuine emotion and personality. "We’re moving away from fake, inauthentic poses. Our goal is to capture the real, the spontaneous, the heartfelt," Afrik explains. This trend underscores the desire for authenticity in wedding photography, capturing moments that are true to the couple and their guests.
In: "2024 is about capturing the genuine essence of the wedding," says Afrik Armando. "We’re focusing on real, spontaneous moments that reflect the couple’s true story. The trend is towards using drones for breathtaking aerial views and embracing film photography for its unique quality. It's about being creative, inclusive, and eco-conscious in our approach."
Out: "Staged and stiff photography is on its way out. Couples now desire natural, emotionally rich photographs that truly capture the spirit of their day," Afrik adds.
ENTERTAINMENT TRENDS:
In: Classics with a Modern Twist - Becca Kaufman of BeatMix Music predicts a return to classic glamour mixed with modern beats. "We're seeing more elegant events morph into nightclub vibes, complete with disco balls and interactive performances. Elegant events turning into nightclub hotspots are all the rage and we are here for it. Lighting and fog are a big part of leaving it all on the dance floor as creating the mood is essential for guests to really let go. We have also seen the return of the slow dance. Post Covid, clients wanted nothing lagging, nothing intimate, but now we are seeing more requests for some time on the dance floor for some romance, and it’s magical.
Pop Up performances are still a big part of any party, but the Pop Ups seem to be more intentional, meaning more theme or client interest based, versus “we just want something different”. Imagine a french chanteuse appearing and serenading guests over a french inspired dinner, or a second line parade pied piping guests when the hosts vacation in New Orleans? We also love how the stage and the music space have become part of the decor, with patterned dance floors and gorgeous decor elements framing the stage. Music is often the focus of an event post formalities, so making the entertainment part of the design with lighting, costuming, and decor elements makes for a seamless experience for the guests. We always say, how the entertainment looks is just as important as how it sounds." she shares.
Out: Lackluster Entertainment - "Bright lights without ambiance, fast-paced music without a break, and entertainment as an afterthought are out. 2024 is all about creating immersive, thematic experiences," Kaufman notes.
In: The Spectacle of Drone Shows
A groundbreaking addition to wedding entertainment, drone shows are fast becoming a sought-after feature. These dazzling displays add a futuristic and awe-inspiring element to celebrations, creating unforgettable visual experiences for guests.
In: Strolling Entertainment
A new trend in wedding entertainment is the rise of strolling performers. As guests transition from one space to another, these entertainers add an element of surprise and delight, keeping the energy high and the atmosphere engaging. This could include anything from roving musicians and magicians to interactive performance artists, adding a dynamic and immersive layer to the wedding festivities.
Malike Adigun, Dj Malike renowned for his exceptional talent and expertise in music, adds the perfect touch of entertainment to weddings and events. He shares his in and out trend list for wedding entertainment.
In:
1. Elevated Experiences: The new trend is about elevating every part of the wedding. From immersive entertainers greeting guests with drinks to dynamic performances, it’s all about creating unique and unforgettable moments.
2. DJ and Live Music Fusion: The role of the DJ is evolving. Combining live music elements with DJ sets, such as integrating saxophones and drums, is the cutting-edge trend, offering an engaging and vibrant experience.
3. Festival-Style After-Parties: After-parties are transforming into major highlights, incorporating elements like high-tech lighting and silent headphone parties, reminiscent of major music festivals like Coachella.
4. Aesthetic DJ Booths as Statement Pieces: This is the era of making a statement with the DJ’s setup. The look and feel are just as important as the sound of your entertainment.
5. Special Entertainment During Dinner: This year, guests will add entertainment elements other than DJs and bands to keep guests captivated during the dinner portion. Expect cultural and themed performances, singers, dancers, and other engaging acts.
Out:
1. Predictable Entertainment: Generic and clichéd entertainment options are out. There’s a growing preference for innovative and unique entertainment choices.
2. Endless Formalities: The trend is moving away from weddings packed with back-to-back formalities, focusing instead on creating a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for guests.
3. Cheesy Props for Photo Booths: People are seeking a more sophisticated way to capture portraits at weddings. Be ready to see more styled and posed portrait options throughout the night.
FOOD & BEVERAGE TRENDS:
In:
2024 is set to revolutionize wedding catering," Julie Fitzgerald of Entertaining Company predicts. Culinary Experiences and Health-Conscious Choices - "2024 is about exciting, inclusive catering options. Think interactive stations and global flavors. Interactive beverage stations, global dining experiences, and health-conscious menus are in. Guests are looking for more than just a meal; they're seeking a culinary adventure that leaves a lasting impression, says Julie Fitzgerald of Entertaining Company.
Julie highlights several innovative trends for wedding food and beverages in 2024:
1. Interactive Beverage Stations: Moving away from traditional specialty cocktails, 2024 sees the rise of interactive beverage stations. These allow guests to customize their drinks, including mocktails, by adding their choice of spirits like tequila or vodka.
2. Global Dining Experiences: Expect global flavors to take center stage, with options like Dim Sum rolling carts offering an immersive culinary experience.
3. Engaging Dessert Concepts: Desserts become interactive, with guests participating in the experience. Examples include breaking dessert shells or creating affogatos with espresso and ice cream.
4. Individualized Traditional Concepts: Classic dining concepts are being reinvented into individual portions, such as personalized charcuterie boards or fondue servings.
5. Innovative First Courses: The traditional salad course is being replaced with more engaging options like mezze or mini cheese/charcuterie plates.
6. One-Course Meals: Simplifying dining with a bento box or 4-compartment plate approach, combining salad, protein, starch, and vegetables in one course.
7. Simplified, Composed Entrées: The trend is toward simpler entrees, focusing on one main protein paired with vegetables, reminiscent of restaurant-style dining.
8. Waiter-Passed Desserts: Moving away from stationary dessert stations, 2024 will see a trend towards waiter-passed desserts and coffee served from rolling carts for a more personalized service.
Out:
Traditional, Predictable Menus: "The era of standard three-course meals is making way for more creative, personalized dining experiences," Fitzgerald adds. These trends indicate a shift towards more interactive, personalized, and global dining experiences in weddings, offering guests unique and memorable culinary adventures.
In: The Return of the Champagne and Cocktail Tower
We’re seeing a delightful resurgence of a classic symbol of festivity and elegance: the champagne and cocktail tower. This timeless feature is returning to the spotlight, offering a splash of luxury and a nod to the grandeur of classic celebrations.
Champagne towers, with their cascading bubbles and sparkling allure, have always been a hallmark of sophisticated celebrations. In 2024, they’re being reimagined, not just with champagne but also with a variety of creative cocktails, catering to a broader range of tastes and preferences. Cocktail towers serves as a versatile alternative. They allow for customization to fit the theme and spirit of the celebration, whether it’s through the color of the cocktail, the choice of glassware, or the addition of decorative elements. As 2024 unfolds, expect to see more couples embracing this trend, making champagne and cocktail towers a central element of their celebration.
Out: Naked Cakes
Once a staple of rustic and minimalist wedding themes, naked cakes are seeing a decline in popularity. As we move into 2024, couples are opting for more elaborately decorated cakes or alternative dessert options, moving away from the bare, simplistic style of naked cakes.
2024 is set to bring transformative trends that blend culinary artistry with personal expression. Andrea Reno, the owner of Pistores Cakes and a distinguished graduate of The French Pastry School, brings her extensive expertise to highlight what's trending in wedding confections.
Out:
Reno notes a significant shift away from certain traditional elements in wedding cakes:
Messy Cakes and Basic Flavors: The era of simplistic, one-layered flavors and messy cake designs is fading. Couples now prioritize the taste experience, wanting guests to relish every bite of the cake or dessert display.
Small-Scale Cakes: One or two-tiered cakes are giving way to grander, more artistic presentations. Couples are seeking cakes that make a statement.
Vintage Piping and Dress-Inspired Cakes: Traditional 'vintage' piping techniques and dress-inspired designs are being relegated more to birthday and other celebration cakes. Couples prefer their cakes to complement, not compete with, their own shine.
Cake Toppers: The use of toppers on wedding cakes is seeing a decline, as more couples opt for cleaner, more streamlined designs.
In:
Looking to 2024, Reno highlights several exciting trends in wedding cakes and desserts:
Complex and Adventurous Flavors: There’s a growing preference for flavors that are true to the ingredient, offering a complex and adventurous taste experience to keep guests intrigued.
Vibrant Sugar Flowers: Colorful and dynamic sugar flowers are in vogue, adding a touch of movement and life to cake designs.
Trusting the Cake Artist: More couples are giving creative freedom to their cake designers, allowing for unique and personalized creations.
Cakes as Favors: Transforming the cake into a take-home favor is a trend on the rise. Mini cakes or personalized cake slices in calligraphed boxes turn the dessert into a memorable gift.
FASHION & BEAUTY TRENDS:
We're seeing a trend in extravagant guest fashion, taking black-tie attire to new heights. Couples are also inviting guests to partake in over-the-top fashion statements, elevating the entire event's style. Couples are also investing in professional stylists and day-of dressers for a curated look
Fashion Forward: Bridal Trends from Julie Sabatino of The Stylish Bride.
In: Professional Stylists and Over-the-Top Guest Fashion - Julie Sabatino of The Stylish Bride observes an upsurge in couples using professional stylists for diverse wedding looks:
Long Reception Dresses: Julie Sabatino notes a shift towards longer dresses for receptions, with some brides opting for a third dress change into a shorter style for after-parties.
Intimate Wedding Parties: "There’s a trend towards smaller wedding parties, with more investment in each member's attire," says Sabatino.
Unique Attire Pieces: Increasingly, brides are seeking custom or vintage pieces for their wedding weekend wardrobe, looking for unique and personalized fashion statements.. she notes.
